Hunter Acoustics

Environmental Noise & Planning

Hunter Acoustics environmental impact assessments are a pre-requisite for many major developments with noise & vibration high on the list of issues to be considered.

As well as noise generated by the development itself and the construction programme, secondary effects such as associated increased traffic flows may be included. Detailed noise contour plots can be generated by Hunter Acoustics across large sites to assess the effects of major sites on the surrounding area and the effect of local road, rail and air traffic and industry on the site itself.

For residential sites local authorities often require an assessment of the local noise climate (with development adjacent to mainline railways, vibration can also be an area of concern) with reference to Planning Policy Guidance 24 [PPG24] (England) or Technical Advice Note 11 [TAN11] (Wales). Appropriate planning conditions also require an assessment of potential attenuation measures, such as acoustic glazing and ventilation.

As well as detailed acoustic design input, tactful liaison with local planning representatives and residents is vital. Expert testimony can be given at public inquiry, statutory and planning appeals.
